Przy niektórych rzeczownikach – school, hospital, prison, church, university, bed, work, home – przedimek zmienia znaczenie. Bez przedimka mamy na myśli cel miejsca (nauka, leczenie, kara). Z „the” mamy na myśli budynek lub konkretne miejsce.
Budowa
| Schemat | Przykład |
|---|---|
| no article: the institution's purpose | go to school, be in hospital, go to prison |
| the: the building or a specific place | go to the school, visit the hospital |
| a/an: one of a type; the + superlative; the + unique |
Kiedy tego używamy

- Budynek lub wizyta, z „the”: go to the school (na spotkanie), visit the hospital.
- Podobne pary: at university / at the university, in bed / on the bed, at sea / by the sea.
- Amerykański często mówi in the hospital, gdzie brytyjski in hospital.
