The Present Perfect Continuous stresses the duration of an action that started in the past and is still going on, or has only just stopped and has visible results. It answers the question “How long?”.

How to form the Present Perfect Continuous

Type Pattern Example
Affirmative subject + have/has + been + verb-ing I have been working. · She has been working.
Negative subject + have/has + not + been + verb-ing They haven't been sleeping well.
Question Have/Has + subject + been + verb-ing? How long have you been waiting?

When to use the Present Perfect Continuous

  • An action that started in the past and continues now: I have been learning English for two years.
  • A recent action with a visible result: You look tired. Have you been running?
  • Repeated activity over a period up to now: She has been calling me all week.

Signal words

These words often show that the Present Perfect Continuous is needed: for, since, how long, lately, recently, all day, all morning, all my life.

Examples

  • It has been raining since morning.
  • How long have you been waiting?
  • We have been living here for five years.
  • He has been working too hard lately.
  • I haven't been feeling well.
  • They have been playing since noon.

Common mistakes

  • Using it with a number of times: I have been reading three books → I have read three books (the result or number matters, not the duration).
  • Using it with stative verbs: I have been knowing him → I have known him for years.

Frequently asked questions

Present Perfect or Present Perfect Continuous?

“I have lived here for five years” and “I have been living here for five years” are both correct; the continuous sounds more temporary and stresses the activity. For a finished result use the simple form: “I have painted the room.”
